Wedding DJ or Wedding Band?

During your wedding planning process you will find that some decisions will be easy to make and some decisions will be difficult! Choosing between a DJ or a Band to play music at your wedding reception is typically one of those more difficult decisions to make.  As music can greatly influence the energy of you and your guests, we wanted to go over the two options in hopes that this will help you in choosing the musical styling that would be PERFECT for your wedding day!

General things to consider when selecting a DJ or a Band

The Cost: We of course have to mention that it’s important to take into consideration the cost between the two options. Depending on the vendors you are looking at, the difference in cost can be a large amount that will greatly affect your budget

Your Guests: Think about the age demographic of your guests! What are the types of music that they would enjoy? Would the majority of them dance during the reception?  And do they all enjoy the same type/genre of music that your band would play?

The Atmosphere: Though they both will be playing music, the look and sound of a DJ in comparison to a Band is very different! Visualize what your dream wedding looks like and sounds like! What “vibe” do you want to feel when you enter the reception?

Now that we covered the general things to consider, let’s go into the specifics of each option!

DJ

  • They have access to a LARGE library of music. This would be great for couples who have a long list of specific songs that they would like to be played and especially if some of these songs are in a different language!

  • Many DJs also offer additional services and booking one of these packages could save you money. Some of these services could include being your emcee, providing uplighting and/or cold sparks, and a few even offer photobooth services!

  • As there are typically only 1-2 individuals that will be providing the DJ services, the cost you will spend on a vendor meal should not greatly impact your budget.

Band

  • They are live entertainment! As wedding bands typically have 5-10 members they are an ensemble of talented musicians and will be able to not just play music at your wedding but they will PERFORM it for your guests!

  • Great for  couples who have musical talents of their own that they would like to showcase at their reception. We coordinated a wedding where the groom joined the band to play the guitar for a song dedicated to his new wife!

  • Since they are not the original artists of the music they will play, a band can provide a unique twist to well loved songs and cover them in a way that is special and unique to your wedding! Keep in mind the amount of space your band will need and the amount of equipment they will need/bring with them.

As either decision will get you a vendor who will provide amazing music on your wedding day we don’t think you can go wrong. If it’s in your ability you could even consider having BOTH a DJ and a Band! Of course this is something you would wanna check that your venue would be able to do before booking both! If you hire the right combination, your DJ & Band could even share a sound system (to SAVE you money)! But whether it’s a DJ or a Band or even Both, we hope that this has helped you in selecting the music that would make the best soundtrack for  your wedding day!
